In the past I have used all sorts of different products and have never found the right one for my very long, very thick hair! Some of them didn't work at all and others only worked with a huge amount of hairspray. The wand on the other hand is brilliant and by far the best thing I have ever used. As soon as it arrived I tried it out; it's useful to watch some youtube videos to work out how to do it especially if you're not used to curling your hair. My first attempt came out VERY curly but I brushed it out, applied some mousse and still had beautiful loose curls. I didn't use any hairspray because I wanted to see how long the curls would last.....and after 24 hours they're still here(with no hairspray and having been slept on). I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to hair styling products, and was expecting to have some difficulty creating the look I was after. However, the Pearl Wand was surprisingly simple to use and is scorching hot within seconds.Admittedly the buttons are awkwardly positioned. It's only too easy to inadvertently press them while you're attempting to curl your hair and you don't always notice that you've cranked the heat up to 210 degrees and are on the verge of reducing your hair to straw. Once you've learnt to watch where you put your hands, however, this curler is efficient and not too unwieldy. I do have quite short hair and only want to create loose curls, which is probably a simpler matter than creating masses of tumbling ringlets, but it really did take very little time to transform my hair from shapeless and bushy to shiny, smooth and gently curled. This curl-maker is packed in its own heat-proof pouch within a sturdy and attractive cardboard box. There is a good length of flex so you don't have to curl your hair kneeling down by the electric point. The wand is smooth and tapers nicely so you can make fat ringlets or thin corkscrews. The heat controls are self-explanatory, although there is an instruction leaflet included. The temperature shows clearly, next to the on/off button and the wand heats up very quickly.I am not very experienced with curl-makers and found it a bit awkward to hold it close enough to my scalp and simultaneously wind my lock around the wand. I caught my fingers a couple of times at first but learned quite fast why the wand ends with a cool-tip. The curls were nicely formed, bouncy and stayed in place. It would be much easier and quicker to use it on another person than it is to use on oneself, but that could be my inexperience. There is not a shield that clamps down over the hair being curled...
